We can't believe we are celebrating a century of Lake Life! The Dix Dam was completed in 1925, and the routing tunnel for the Dix River was officially closed on March 17 - and she reached her first winter pool in October of the same year. So much history about our little oasis here in Central Kentucky!
Welcome to Herrington Lake – Central Kentucky's Hidden Gem! Just shy of a century ago, Herrington Lake achieved its seasonal pool for the first time in the fall of 1925. Sitting in the heart of the three counties, this man-made wonder is the deepest lake in Kentucky, boasting a depth of 239 feet at the dam. Its existence is owed to the strategic damming of the Dix River by Kentucky Utilities.
As the routing tunnel of the Dix River was closed in the spring of 1925 and the new hydroelectric plant came online, a breathtaking, forested limestone valley transformed into the stunning oasis we know today. Since its creation, Herrington Lake has been more than a picturesque playground; it's the beating heart of our communities. Families, businesses, and the surrounding areas have quietly thrived on its shores, with many residents having grown up here.
This lake is more than just water – it's a shared sense of community, a generational link that binds families together in this small Kentucky paradise. Herrington Lake is not just a place; it's our home, and we hold it close to our hearts. We're not just witnessing growth, but passing down a legacy. As stewards of this rural Kentucky haven, we invite you to explore and experience the beauty of Herrington Lake – a truly special area that we proudly call HOME.
As we head into2026 I want to continue to work with our local communities and bring both our visitors AND residents more information that they will enjoy and find valuable, such as community information, local history and partnerships with local businesses to help increase the visibility of our local offerings. We want to bring you the best digital resources for this area - as well as some beautiful local photography, fun custom lake-vibe clothes, and general info about our home here in Kentucky — sharing some of the best things that lake life can offer. "Lake Life. Better Life." is our motto!

On a calm morning, Herrington Lake looks a world away from the politics in Frankfort. But what happens in committee rooms and late‑night floor votes can decide how clean our water is, how safe our fish are, and what kind of place this lake will be for our kids and grandkids. A recent Kentucky Waterways Alliance (KWA) town hall pulled back the curtain on those connections and showed why communities like ours need to start paying close attention. With a proposed Data Center making its way into Mercer County, adjacent to the northern parts of the lake, fed by a brand new 645 megawatt gas reactor unit at KU’s Brown Generating Station - a new industrial footprint around Herrington Lake is taking shape. We should be ready.
February 9, 2026 HARRODSBURG, Ky. (LEX 18)— A Mercer County resident is organizing opposition to potential data center development ahead of a public meeting scheduled for next week.
Dr. Diane Floyd, who moved to the county in 2020, has started a Change.org petition that received more than 700 signatures in less than a week opposing any construction of a data center in Mercer County.
November 5, 2025 –BOYLE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) — Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman returned to her home county Tuesday as officials in Boyle and Mercer counties broke ground on a new sewer project for the Herrington Lake area.
The Gwinn Island Sanitary Sewer project will impact more than 1,000 people and 129 households. Residents will be able to replace their septic systems with sewer lines at no cost.
