Boating on Herrington Lake

Herrington Lake offers a stunning escape for boaters of all experience levels. Whether you're cruising on a pontoon with family or casting a line from a fishing boat, this guide will equip you for a fun and safe adventure out our little Central Kentucky oasis.

Getting Started

  • Boat Ramps: Herrington Lake boasts many public boat ramps conveniently located around the shore. Check out our interactive map, further down this page, to find the ramp closest to you. Marina contact information can be found [HERE].
  • Boat Rentals: Looking to hit the water without the trailer? Almost all of our marinas offer pontoon boats, houseboats, and other watercraft rentals. Visit our directory of marinas [HERE] to find the perfect fit for your needs. Each marina takes care of their own rentals, so just find the one that is closest to your point of entry.
  • Boating Regulations: Brush up on Kentucky boating regulations before getting underway. This includes life jacket requirements, safe boating practices, and registration information [HERE]. KDFWR does patrol the lake, and their most common stops include incorrect registration display. And, their second question is going to be about life vests. Make sure you're good to go!

Tips For A Smooth Ride

  • Geography and Topography: Herrington Lake is known for its beauty and has been called the hidden gem of  Central Kentucky. Utilize a lake map [HERE] to navigate our waters. Be aware of floating tree debris, as this is the most common encounter on the water. Unfortunately, the state's ash wood blight is continuing to effect our tricounty area.
  • Know Before You Go: Check the weather forecast before your trip. Be mindful of wind speed and potential storms, especially if you're in a smaller boat. If you are caught in a storm, please follow these best practices.
  • Pack Smart: Pack sunscreen, snacks, and plenty of water. Don't forget a first-aid kit and a trash bag to dispose of any waste responsibly. If you Pack It Onto the Lake, Pack it Out! If you see something in the lake that shouldn't be (i.e., styrofoam), please try to retrieve it safely.

No Wake Zones

Understanding No-Wake Zones

A no-wake zone is a designated area on a body of water where boat operators are required to maintain a speed that produces no wake. Wakes are the waves created by a moving boat. In these zones, operating at idle speed is crucial to protect swimmers, shoreline property, and smaller vessels. Kentucky law defines idle speed as the “slowest speed possible to maintain maneuverability” of a boat. Generally speaking, for a properly adjusted boat, this is the speed at which a boat is put into gear without advancing the throttle.

Kentucky Law and Wake Damage

In Kentucky, boat operators are responsible for any damage caused by their vessel’s wake. This includes damage to the docks, boats, and shoreline property of our residents. Failure to adhere to no-wake zone regulations can result in significant legal and financial consequences.

Your watercraft's registration numbers are available through the state's Dept. of Transportation to any member of our community wishing to press charges. According to Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) § 235.300, the operator of a vessel or motorboat is liable for any damage or injury caused by negligent operation. This includes negligence that violates state statutes. Some examples of negligent or reckless boat operation include:

  • Jumping a wake with a motorized vessel within 100 feet of another vessel
  • Jumping the wake of any vessel that is towing a person on water skis, inner tube, wakeboard, or other similar device
  • Operating a boat in a "No Wake" zone without keeping it at "No Wake" speed

Kentucky law also prohibits operating a boat while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. A person is legally intoxicated in Kentucky if their blood alcohol concentration is 0.08% or more.

The interactive map below provides a detailed overview of all of our No-Wake Zones. There is also a PDF available to download a hard copy for your device or to print. Please note: our residents are vigilant and will follow-up in the event of damage caused by negligent operation in our No-Wake Zones.

Importance of Adherence

We urge all boaters to respect no-wake zone regulations. By operating at idle speed in these areas, you contribute to a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone on the lake. Failure to comply can result in fines, citations, and liability for any damages caused.

  • Emergency Plan: Have a plan in case of severe weather.

Boat Condition

  • Regular Maintenance: Ensure your boat is in good working condition.
  • Safety Equipment: Verify that all required safety equipment, such as PFDs and first aid kits, are on board and accessible. Note that KDFWR regulations: For each person onboard a vessel, federal as well as state law requires a Type I, II, or III personal flotation device (PFD) on all boats. Boats 16 feet and over, except canoes and kayaks, must also carry one Type IV throwable PFD.
  • Capacity Limits: Do not overload your boat.

Prohibited Riding

It is illegal in the state of Kentucky to do any of the following when operating above idle speed:

  • Ride on an enclosed bow.
  • Ride outside the protective railing of a pontoon or houseboat.
  • Ride on a seat which extends 6 inches above the plane of the boat’s gunwales.
  • Ride on the sides, back, engine cover or seat back.
  • Ride in any other obviously dangerous position which could lead to falling overboard.

Operator Responsibility

  • Alcohol and Drugs: Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Fatigue: Avoid boating when tired.
  • Watch Your Speed: Observe posted speed limits and be aware of other boaters. Note that IDLE SPEED is the lowest speed that allows steerage of the vessel, almost always below 5mph. Review our No-Wake Zones [HERE}

Emergency Preparedness

  • Know Your Location: Be familiar with the lake and have a map or GPS.
  • Emergency Contacts: Have emergency contact information readily available.
  • Communication: Carry a marine radio or cell phone in a waterproof case.

By prioritizing safety and following these guidelines, you can enjoy a worry-free boating experience on Herrington Lake.

Wake Boats

Wake boats are welcome on Herrington Lake, however we ask that you DO NOT fill the ballast. Certain parts of the lake can and do sustain damage from wakes, including private docks. The soil erosion that occurs with uncontrolled wakes is also hazardous. Our phosphorus-rich soil eroding into Herrington is of concern to the ongoing health of our ecology. Please follow all No-Wake Zones.
