Late last year you may recall we had a search and rescue of a local young man who had taken off near dark on his JetSki and hadn’t made it home. It all turned out fine, especially because we had such an amazing community show up and support the local law enforcement. After that - it seemed like maybe we should more formally prepare ourselves for something like this. Social media helped, but we realized we need to be better organized and capable so we can coordinate effectively and not miss anything.
Turns out we have the perfect person to assist with this in every way. Patti Carter Bishop has extensive experience with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, who help provide some of the very best training out there to local law enforcement. Patti would be the first to tell you that it’s not a matter of IF someone goes missing, it’s just a matter of WHEN. So, we are going to be putting together a volunteer SAR program for our lake community, so that we can easily and quickly step into action to assist law enforcement.
Patti and I are tagging local law enforcement to see if everyone’s up to date on their S&R training - NCMEC has donations and grants that help cover these trainings for our local folks, which is very awesome. And, even though it may be child-specific, it easily carries over to adults. They will work to get them the training needed and then from there we will coordinate training of our volunteer community. While we work that angle we want to get the volunteer program started and we have some detailed questions we'd like to get your responses to.
Please note that these are all confidential and won't be shared publicly in ANY way. This background info will be used to help us "map out" all of our community resources, so we can leverage all of ourselves in the best way possible in the event of an emergency. We will have at least one additional "paperwork" step that includes a legal waiver and we are working on that soon. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to either of us!

Good afternoon lakers! Well, summer is finally here - I wanted to reach out and start coordinating our program. We are well on the way with about 60 people ready to go - THANK YOU!
Firstly, Patti and I are working on a CPR & First Aid training. That would be two (2) half-day events. I’m currently grabbing location ideas, but first if you could let me know your availability for this type of training. I’ve put a survey link below that’ll just take you a moment to complete. Just click which days work best for you. Naturally, we want to match up with the most convenient times for the most people. If you’re not able to make that training happen - that’s ok! We simply want to roll that out to the community and get as many as we can. Never hurts to be prepared! Once we get the dates organized, we will reach back out.
Secondly, we are looking at potential timing for “all of us” to get together, meet, discuss, plan, and get our SAR organization officially off the ground with its participants. I envision we will be able to meet up at one of our marinas - but we will get that confirmed. If you could include that in your thinking on what days you are available for “training”. We are looking at that week after Memorial Day into the first of June. Patti and I both look forward to meeting y’all.
Third, I have created a Facebook Group called “Herrington Lake SAR” - link below/next to this. This will be a private group for us to help with on-demand communication. There are some chat/messenger features which might come in handy and I’d like to test that. Having a clear channel of communication during a crisis event will be important. If you are not on Facebook, again, that is ok! I will be continuing to email essential info as we move along, but I believe Facebook will provide an essential organizing and communication tool.
Lastly, I wanted you all to be the first to know: I’ve been working with a woman named Kelly Prewitt, she lost her son Manny to drowning on Herrington coming up on 5 years ago (June 13). Kelly started a charity called Swim Smart, and they sponsor building and maintaining life jacket stations in collaboration with the Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Her crew builds them and our Game Wardens have a grant to keep them filled. Kamp Kennedy looks to be our very first one – and HLM has also 100% committed. I’m pretty sure we will be able to get a few more. Again, I think this is something we will be all proud of!
Thank you all again for volunteering for this. I know we will grow the group as we move along, but please feel free to invite your neighbors. When an emergency happens, all hands on deck at the lake is important. If you have someone who’d like to join- just give them my contact info! Or, even better, just direct them to the SAR volunteer form (above this note - you can forward this page).
As always, don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions and Patti and I are looking forward to meeting you.
